Where History Finds Its New Beginning

Riverside on Main brings new life to the Edgecombe County Home, a 1937 Colonial Revival campus on North Main Street. The County Home once cared for Edgecombe’s elderly and residents in need, and its neighboring sanitarium treated patients with tuberculosis.

Timeline

1937

The Edgecombe County Home and its tuberculosis sanitarium open in December, designed in the Colonial Revival style by architect Eric G. Flannagan.

1953–1976

The campus grows into a hub for county services, adding a public health center in 1953, rest homes in 1955, a mental health clinic in 1973, and Social Services offices in 1976.

2012

County offices move out, and the buildings sit largely vacant, reopening briefly in 2016 to serve the community after Hurricane Matthew.

2025

Hykal Homes begins restoring the campus as Riverside on Main.

2026

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Edgecombe County Home Historic District on September 8, 2026.
